WARNING: Every 50/50 is extremely situational
Fundamentals
A "50/50" is when two people hit the ball at the same time. If you "win" a 50/50, the ball goes in the direction you want. It takes a lot of skill ... not luck ... to win 50/50s consistently.
You have to see which direction the opponent is coming from, where your teammates are and decide the best place to hit the ball.
The most difficult part of winning a 50/50 is reading how the opponent is going to touch the ball and you countering their touch.
Losing a 50/50
If you are going for a kickoff in 2s or 3s, you can intentionally lose the 50/50 to gain possession.
Sometimes it's better to "lose" the 50/50 and redirect the ball back to your team. Rather than "win" a 50/50 just to get it on the opponent's side of the field and give them possession.

3 Key Factors of 50/50s
Timing
Hitting the ball too quickly can get you dunked on, too late and the opponent can hit the ball around you. If you want the outcome of the 50/50 to be more controlled, reach the ball at the same time as the opponent.
Precision
If you don't hit the middle of the ball you will most likely get a bad 50/50 (unless you do it on purpose). If you're trying to block your opponent, pre-jumping or predicting the opponent's touch can help you win the 50/50.
Speed
This is the least important factor but leads to the most powerful touches. If used properly with the other 2 factors, speed can be lethal for winning 50/50s.
You should focus on Timing and Precision before fully committing to quick and aggressive 50/50s. You don't have to be going fast to win a 50/50
